Overweight and obesity (the body mass index over 25 and 30, respectively) is defined as an excessive or abnormal accumulation of fat in the body, which presents a health risk. Obesity is a multifactorial and worldwide disease which is linked with several comorbidities, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2DM), cancer and, based on recent studies, elevated risk of severe COVID-19, hospitalization, incubation, and death. The prevalence of obesity in the world, between 1980 – 2013, doubled, and currently, 4 million deaths annually are attributed to comorbidity of obesity or being overweight; and as such is currently considered an epidemic worldwide. Spending a large majority of an employee’s time at the workplace makes it an ideal setting to promote lifestyle interventions. Regarding previous studies, it has been suggested that workplace health promotion programs for weight loss can potentially increase employees health. Moreover, workplaces have the potential to reach large populations of employees and offer opportunities to improve physical activity and dietary behaviours. In order to have a healthy workplace, employers need to recognize how to manage obesity among their employees and develop evidence-based health promotion programs for the prevention and treatment of obesity; in this regard, they could offer the workers facilities that can assist with improving their health.
