FLAME – Flies in a Mine

The FLAME project, Flies in A Mine, studies the effects of working deep underground. The project is based in SNOLAB, the deep underground particle physics laboratory two kilometers underground in Creighton mine, and uses the fly model, exercise, and this underground environment, to explore the biology of working underground. The project is quantifying the impact on large-scale biological characteristics, such as longevity, and small-scale characteristics, such as changes in gene expression and metabolite concentrations. Preliminary findings show that both the underground environment, presumably the higher atmospheric pressure or the change in pressure between surface and underground, and exercise have broad biological impacts, but also show substantial variation between individuals. Currently, the project is expanding in include a greater focus on the genetic variation and to quantify behavioural changes that would indicate an impact on cognitive ability and learning.
