COPD and Compensation Claims: Every Miner has their Story

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) causes many deaths in the world. Cigarettes are the main cause of this disease. However, workplace exposures, including those in the mining industry, may also lead to COPD. Some exposures include dust and fumes. As a result, workers in the mining industry may submit compensation claims. Work-related COPD is under-compensated and poorly recognized by the Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB). Underground miners who have work-related COPD can struggle to complete forms and have their claims approved, and because of this, they can struggle with money, family, and mental health problems. Presented by Dr. Sherry Mongeau.
