The Leo Gerard Lecture Series on Workplace and Labour Studies Presents

“Participatory ergonomics, appreciative inquiry, and the design of attractive work” by Prof Robin Burgess-Limerick of the University of Queensland.

Lecture Description:

This lecture:

1) reviews the evidence and lessons-learned from implementing participatory ergonomics to improve workplace health and safety. Participatory ergonomics means actively involving workers in developing and implementing workplace changes;

2) introduces an appreciative inquiry framework for workplace change; and

3) discusses preliminary results from a project conducted in Australia and Sweden that utilises such an approach to identify opportunities to increase the attractiveness of mining work for both current and future employees.

Prof Burgess-Limerick Bio: 

Robin Burgess-Limerick is a Professor of Human Factors at the Mining Industry Safety and Health Centre, in the Sustainable Minerals Institute, at the University of Queensland. Robin is an experienced human factors and ergonomics researcher and consultant across a range of industries and topics including mining automation, human-machine interface design, equipment design to reduce injury risks, manual task risk management, and whole body vibration measurement and management. He is a past-president, and Fellow, of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Australia.
