Why tea and yoga just aren’t enough: A critical discussion of work-life balance and motherhood

In Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) discourse, ‘work-life balance’ consists of time conflicts and feeling overloaded by multiple role pressures. In the family, there is an uneven sharing of caregiving duties and less work-life balance for mothers, with over 20% of women performing caregiving simultaneously with leisure activities compared with 6% of men. The aim in this presentation is to explore the complexity of work-life balance for mothers. Attention is also drawn to the ‘motherhood penalty’ in the workplace, and the impact on women’s mental health and well-being. Key take-away points are provided related to self-care, work-life balance, and motherhood. Presented by Dr. Kerry R. McGannon.
